Hong Kong Babies

The original article published by the Guardian in the UK is here:

Printed with a different title in today's SCMP, I can't help feeling angry. Angry that the article was published here in Hong Kong where the situation is so very different.

The article discusses the situation in the UK where mums are apparently under so much pressure to breastfeed, some feel guilty about feeding their babies formula.

Six thousand miles away, mums in HK have NO pressure to breastfeed whatsoever. HK's blatant disregard for the WHO's International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes has a lot to answer for. Expectant parents have to be very determined NOT to be seduced by the penetrating marketing of formula.

The local pressure is positively the opposite of that described in the article. Breastfeeding mums are often made to feel ashamed for feeding in public.

I'll be urging the SCMP to consider a response report on the local situation and set the story straight.

I read an interesting article about breast pumps, which also touches breastfeeding throughout the history and of course, formula milk. It's written by a historian who is a mother herself, published by the New Yorker:

And, an equally interesting Q & A with the author too:

I agree totally with you, it is quite irresponsible of SCMP to publish such an article!
